World Malaria Day 2025: Malaria Ends with Us

In this timely conversation, our President, ‌RobynneAnderson speaks with our Chief Policy Officer, ‌IsabelleCoche about how climate change is driving the resurgence and spread of diseases like #malaria and dengue.

Each year on April 25, World Malaria Day serves as a crucial reminder of the global commitment needed to end one of the world’s deadliest diseases. It is a moment to reflect on progress, acknowledge challenges, and muster support across sectors and borders. According to the World Health Organization, in 2023, there were an estimated 263 million malaria cases and nearly 600,000 deaths worldwide, most of which occurred in sub-Saharan Africa. Despite progress, malaria continues to take a heavy toll, particularly impacting vulnerable populations: children under five, pregnant women, and communities with limited access to healthcare.

This year’s World Malaria Day theme: “Malaria Ends with Us: Reinvest, Reimagine, Reignite” is a powerful call to action. While significant advances have been made, progress in the fight against malaria is now under threat. Climate change is expanding mosquito habitats and altering transmission patterns, while insecticide and drug resistance are weakening the impact of frontline tools. Most critically, financial support for malaria programs is not keeping pace with current needs. A substantial funding gap is further hindering the implementation of effective malaria control interventions.

To turn the tide, renewed political will, sustained investment, and innovation are essential. Success depends not only on finding effective solutions but on ensuring they reach those who need them most. Governments, researchers, and communities must work together to expand access to proven tools while advancing new ones.

Echoing this call to action, the Outreach Network for Gene Drive Research’s World Malaria Day campaign is highlighting researchers, experts and malaria advocates and their commitment to end malaria. Held under the theme “Reimagining the fight against malaria”, the campaign aims to underscore the persistent challenges that must be addressed to accelerate progress against malaria and raise awareness of innovations that could drive change.

This is a moment to move beyond intention and commit to bold action. Ending malaria will take increased investment, stronger partnerships, and a clear commitment to finding effective solutions, especially for those most affected by the disease.
