Resilient and Sustainable African Agriculture and Food Systems


Climate change is one of the most pressing global challenges to the resilience of agricultural and food systems. The good news is that there are adaptation measures through which agricultural production systems, both crop and livestock, can build resilience to climate shocks. This was highlighted during an official COP27 side event convened by the Common Market for East and Southern Africa (COMESA), the Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis (FANRPAN), the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (GRSB) and the University of Pretoria in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt on the 14th of November 2022.

The event: Towards Resilient, Sustainable, Transformed African Agriculture and Food Systems, was attended by over 50 participants. It explored opportunities to overcome the challenges posed by climate change to food systems in Africa. The event also highlighted the interlinkages between climate-resilient agricultural practices, livelihoods, and food security.  

Partners showcased, practical actions which can be adopted, implemented and upscaled by African governments, development partners, and other stakeholders to build resilience and sustainability into Africa’s agricultural production systems.  

Lufingo Mwamakamba

Lufingo is the Stakeholder Engagement Manager at Emerging ag. He has over 15 years of experience in developing and facilitating strategic partnerships and engagements, with a particular focus on food systems, climate change, and sustainable development. 
 
Prior to joining Emergin ag, he served as the Regional Alliances Leader for the Global Alliance for Climate-Smart Agriculture (GACSA) at the Food, Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. He previously served as the Director for Corporate Affairs and the Partnerships Manager at the pan-African, Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network (FANRPAN).
 
Lufingo is a Tanzanian national who has lived, worked, and studied in South Africa, Italy, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Zimbabwe, and Kenya. He holds an MSc in Health Promotion and Public Health from Brunel University, London UK, a post-graduate Specialization in Administration from the Faculdades Oswaldo Cruz, Sao Paulo, Brazil, and a BSc in Zoology from the University of East Africa, Baraton – Eldoret, Kenya.
