New York Climate Week 2024, scheduled from September 22-29, 2024, promises to be a critical moment for global climate action as we are heading towards COP29 in Baku. Emerging Ag will be on the ground to amplify calls for collaboration in transforming our food systems and advancing efforts towards building climate-resilient agriculture.
As one of the largest climate events, it will bring together over 600 in-person, hybrid, and virtual events across New York City, involving business leaders, policymakers, and civil society from around the world. Climate Week is organized by Climate Group, an international non-profit dedicated to accelerating climate solutions. Held in partnership with the United Nations General Assembly and coordinated with the City of New York, this event seeks to foster progress and highlight actionable pathways towards a sustainable future.
The 2024 edition emphasizes the need for rapid acceleration in addressing climate challenges, with the theme, “It’s Time,” reflecting a sense of urgency in achieving net-zero goals. While climate action spans various sectors, one critical focus this year will be food systems and their relationship to climate change.
The Role of Food Systems in Climate Action
The global food system is responsible for 21-37% of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, making it a major contributor to climate change. Yet, the impact of agriculture on global warming is often underestimated. During Climate Week NYC 2024, food will be central to discussions, with various sessions dedicated to transforming how we produce, distribute, and consume food in the face of the climate crisis.
Throughout the week, multiple event all over the city will explore key topics such as sustainable farming, land restoration, agroforestry, and regenerative agriculture. These strategies are crucial in cutting GHG emissions while preserving ecosystems. Experts will also examine ways to promote climate-friendly diets, reduce food waste, and leverage Indigenous land management practices for sustainable land use. A Call for Global Leadership
As global temperatures continue to rise, Climate Week NYC 2024 will amplify calls for stronger leadership and collaboration in transforming food systems and supporting efforts towards building climate resilient agriculture. Governments, businesses, and civil society will be urged to act faster to support regenerative and sustainable practices that can reduce emissions, enhance food security, and safeguard the planet for future generations.
New York Climate Week 2024 offers a platform to continue shedding the light on these issues. With the right policies in place, it is possible to create sustainable food production that not only nourishes people but also contributes to our global fight against climate change.
