Through this planning, our calendar grew, and it shaped up to be a very busy year.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-813\" style=\"float: right;\" src=\"https:\/\/emergingag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/b2ap3_large_LANNA_Zaira-web.jpg\" width=\"170\" height=\"205\" align=\"center\" data-style=\"clear\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emergingag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/b2ap3_large_LANNA_Zaira-web.jpg 600w, https:\/\/emergingag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/b2ap3_large_LANNA_Zaira-web-249x300.jpg 249w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 170px) 100vw, 170px\" \/>Internally, the team continued to grow as we welcomed <a href=\"https:\/\/emergingag.com\/fr\/?p=65\">Zaira Lanna<\/a> in the role of Strategy Manager. As a Strategy Manager, Zaira works on stakeholder engagement strategies, risk monitoring and policy development in a range of projects, mostly related to public health and ecosystem conservation. She is an external affair professional with a strong background in emerging economies and a great interest in sustainable development.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-814\" style=\"float: left;\" src=\"https:\/\/emergingag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/b2ap3_large_NGWENYA-Hlami-web.jpg\" width=\"170\" height=\"205\" align=\"center\" data-style=\"clear\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emergingag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/b2ap3_large_NGWENYA-Hlami-web.jpg 550w, https:\/\/emergingag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/b2ap3_large_NGWENYA-Hlami-web-249x300.jpg 249w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 170px) 100vw, 170px\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/emergingag.com\/fr\/?p=64\">Hlami Ngwenya<\/a> also joined the team as a Special Facilitator. She is an International Development Consultant and Lecturer at the University of Free State, South Africa (Centre for Sustainable Agriculture). She is also Social Entrepreneur and Founder and Executive Director of the Facilitation of Systemic Change Consulting Company.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>February<\/h3>\n<h4>Journ\u00e9e mondiale des l\u00e9gumineuses<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-809\" style=\"float: right;\" src=\"https:\/\/emergingag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/b2ap3_large_WPD.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" align=\"center\" data-style=\"clear\" \/>The first international celebration of World Pulses Day, which was officially designated by a resolution of the United Nations to fall on 10 February every year, took place at a luncheon at the United Nation Headquarters on 7 February. The event was co-sponsored by the Permanent Missions of Canada, Burkina Faso and Turkey, as well as by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Global Pulse Confederation (GPC).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The road to the establishment of this important Day was paved with successes that have resounded around the world, beginning with the International year of Pulses in 2016. With this legacy, the celebratory luncheon of World Pulses Day was attended by over 95 guests, 76 of whom were representatives of Member States.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>March<\/h3>\n<h4>Representing Business at UN Environment Assembly (UNEA4)\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-815\" style=\"float: right;\" src=\"https:\/\/emergingag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/b2ap3_large_UNEA4.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" align=\"center\" data-style=\"clear\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emergingag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/b2ap3_large_UNEA4.jpg 501w, https:\/\/emergingag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/b2ap3_large_UNEA4-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The 4th session of the UN Environment Assembly was held March 11\u201315 in Nairobi, on the theme \u2018Innovative Solutions for Environmental Challenges &amp; Sustainable Consumption and Production.\u2019 Emerging Ag organized the Global Business Alliance for the Environment\u2019s High-Level Dinner attended by over 80 guests including Mr. Siim Kiisler, President of UNEA4, alongside many Ambassadors, Ministers of the Environment, Permanent Representatives, NGO representatives, UN staff and private sector actors. The dinner was run as a guided discussion with each table discussing concrete ways to incorporate and leverage the expertise of business when responding to environmental challenges.<\/p>\n<h4>Emerging Ag Kenyan Team Retreat<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-816\" style=\"float: left;\" src=\"https:\/\/emergingag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/b2ap3_large_Team-Kenya.jpg\" width=\"301\" height=\"200\" align=\"center\" data-style=\"clear\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emergingag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/b2ap3_large_Team-Kenya.jpg 674w, https:\/\/emergingag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/b2ap3_large_Team-Kenya-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 301px) 100vw, 301px\" \/>After the UNEA4 conference, 19 team members met at Mount Kenya for the semi-annual team retreat. While we work in a virtual office most of the year, these retreats give us the opportunity to come together to discuss the many projects we work on, and to come together as a team. After three days of intensive meetings, we had the opportunity to visit a school and a number of farms in Kiambu, Kerugoya. Also, the group was able to tour two smallholder dairy farms, as well as the dairy processing plant\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/palmhousedairies.com\/\">Palmhouse Dairies.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The team retreat allowed Emerging to also welcome two new team members, <a href=\"https:\/\/emergingag.com\/fr\/?p=69\">Sophie Goudard<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/emergingag.com\/fr\/?p=73\">Rosemary Navarrete.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-817\" style=\"float: right;\" src=\"https:\/\/emergingag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/b2ap3_large_GOUDARD_Sophie-web.jpg\" width=\"170\" height=\"205\" align=\"center\" data-style=\"clear\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emergingag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/b2ap3_large_GOUDARD_Sophie-web.jpg 367w, https:\/\/emergingag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/b2ap3_large_GOUDARD_Sophie-web-249x300.jpg 249w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 170px) 100vw, 170px\" \/>Sophie acts in the role of Operations Manager and focuses primarily on team logistics, scheduling and event planning. She is a US-trained international lawyer with a Masters in Economic Development.\u00a0 Before joining the team at Emerging, she worked as an Agriculture Adviser for the Minister Counsellor for the Department of Agriculture-Australia, posted to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization-Rome.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>April<\/h3>\n<h4>Emerging Ag supports responsible research on gene drive during International Society for Biosafety Research Conference\u00a0\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p>Emerging Ag in its role of secretariat of the <a href=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/\">Outreach Network for Gene Drive Research<\/a> supported the organization of a parallel session on Risk Assessment and Management of Gene Drive Research during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.isbr2019.com\/\">15th Symposium of the International Society for Biosafety Research (IBSR).<\/a> The session discussed ethical and regulatory issues in carrying out responsible research on gene drive applications for biodiversity conservation and public health.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>May<\/h3>\n<h4>Emerging Ag takes part in an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.efsa.europa.eu\/\">European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)<\/a> workshop on risk assessment of gene drive<\/h4>\n<p>The workshop discussed plausible environmental risks associated with the release of gene drive organisms to control agricultural pests and insects. One of the key takeaways was that existing risk assessment frameworks can be a reference for guiding the research on gene drive applications. More information on the workshop is available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.efsa.europa.eu\/en\/events\/event\/190515\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Outreach Network for Gene Drive Research welcomes 3 new members<\/h4>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pirbright.ac.uk\/\">Pirbright Institute<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.papathanos.org\/\">Insect Genetics Group (Hebrew University of Jerusalem)<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lstmed.ac.uk\/research\/departments\/vector-biology\">Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine<\/a> joined the Network. A <a href=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/blog\">blog<\/a> with news, reports and articles about gene drive was also launched. On the policy front, we saw public recognition of the need for more investment in research and for new tools to address health and conservation challenges. The message was highlighted in several key reports throughout the year, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/ipbes.net\/\">IPBES\u2019 report<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/malaria\/publications\/world_malaria_report\/en\/\">WHO World Malaria Report<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/commissions\/malaria-eradication\">The Lance Commission\u2019s report on Malaria<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucn.org\/theme\/science-and-economics\/our-work\/other-work\/synthetic-biology-and-biodiversity-conservation\/development-iucn-policy-synthetic-biology\/iucn-assessment-synthetic-biology-and-biodiversity\">IUCN report on synthetic biology.<\/a> The members of the Network participated in numerous thematic consultations and preparation meetings worldwide that will inform two major milestones of 2020, the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucncongress2020.org\/event\/members-assembly\/motions\"> IUCN World Conservation Congress (WCC)<\/a> and the adoption of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbd.int\/conferences\/post2020\/wg2020-02\/documents\">CBD Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>June<\/h3>\n<h4>Journ\u00e9e Mondiale du Lait<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/worldmilkday.org\/\">Journ\u00e9e Mondiale du Lait<\/a> was established by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in 2001 to recognize the importance of milk as a global food.<\/p>\n<p>To help create a positive stream of conversation in advance of the celebration, Emerging coordinated for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globaldairyplatform.com\/\">Global Dairy Platform<\/a> (GDP) the Enjoy Dairy Rally from May 29-31, culminating in World Milk Day on June 1. Through social and traditional media as well as hundreds of events, the benefits of milk and dairy products were actively promoted, including how dairy supports the livelihoods of one billion people around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Highlights included:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <strong>664 million impressions<\/strong> for the global campaign (including #EnjoyDairy plus 17 translations and local hashtags)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <strong>50,000+ posts<\/strong> using #WorldMilkDay<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <strong>391 million impressions<\/strong> for #WorldMilkDay<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <strong>60% positive, 36% neutral, 4% negative sentiment<\/strong> for top 3 hashtags<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <strong>525 media articles<\/strong> with <strong>341 million<\/strong> readership (75% positive sentiment)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <strong>107 Countries<\/strong>\u00a0featured World Milk Day activity, among which <strong>66 countries<\/strong> hosted <strong>420 events<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>The 5th Oat Recipe Contest for Avena Canadiense announces 12 talented winners<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-819\" style=\"float: right;\" src=\"https:\/\/emergingag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/b2ap3_large_POGA.jpg\" width=\"273\" height=\"181\" align=\"center\" data-style=\"clear\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emergingag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/b2ap3_large_POGA.jpg 599w, https:\/\/emergingag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/b2ap3_large_POGA-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 273px) 100vw, 273px\" \/>On behalf of the <a href=\"https:\/\/poga.ca\/\">Prairie Oat Growers Association<\/a> (POGA), Emerging Ag announced the 12 winners of the Contest before Canada Day at the Canadian Embassy in Mexico City on June 27. Emerging worked with these representatives to conduct outreach aimed at sharing the contributions of the Dairy Sector to the Sustainable Development Goals. They spoke at side events: United Nations Decade of Family Farming, USCIB\u2019s All In Forum on Multistakeholder Partnerships and UN DESA\u2019s special event on the role of philanthropy on achieving the SDGs.<\/p>\n<h4>First release of sterile male mosquitoes in Burkina Faso<\/h4>\n<p>It was a crucial year for <a href=\"https:\/\/targetmalaria.org\/\">Cible le paludisme<\/a>. The project\u2019s Burkinab\u00e8 team released its <a href=\"https:\/\/targetmalaria.org\/target-malaria-proceeded-with-a-small-scale-release-of-genetically-modified-sterile-male-mosquitoes-in-bana-a-village-in-burkina-faso\/\">first modified sterile male mosquitoes.<\/a> The release was also the first of its kind on the African continent and the result of seven years of dedicated work by all partners. While these mosquitoes are not yet an antimalarial tool, this is undoubtedly a significant step towards the next phase of their gene drive research.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>August<\/h3>\n<h4>Emerging Ag Canadian Team Retreat<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-821\" style=\"float: right;\" src=\"https:\/\/emergingag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/b2ap3_large_Team-Canada.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"149\" align=\"center\" data-style=\"clear\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emergingag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/b2ap3_large_Team-Canada.jpg 510w, https:\/\/emergingag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/b2ap3_large_Team-Canada-300x149.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>In August, the team met for its second team retreat in Calgary, Canada. It was another fantastic opportunity for the group to take part in team building and professional development sessions and have some fun along the way. After two days of meetings and brainstorming sessions, the team took part in a farm tour. We started off at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oldscollege.ca\/\">Olds College<\/a>, an innovative agriculture-based school located approximately 45 minutes North of Calgary. We were able to tour facilities and view work being done in the sectors of animal health, horticulture, and the Digital Agriculture Centre. We, then, visited Kaun\u2019s Seed Farm in Penhold, Alberta, approximately 30 minutes further North. We toured the canola fields and learned about crop breeding techniques, farm machinery and crop rotation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-822\" style=\"float: left;\" src=\"https:\/\/emergingag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/b2ap3_large_JACOB-TUKAI_2019-web.jpg\" width=\"170\" height=\"205\" align=\"center\" data-style=\"clear\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emergingag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/b2ap3_large_JACOB-TUKAI_2019-web.jpg 377w, https:\/\/emergingag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/b2ap3_large_JACOB-TUKAI_2019-web-249x300.jpg 249w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 170px) 100vw, 170px\" \/>In a year of growth, the Emerging Ag team gained another new member with <a href=\"https:\/\/emergingag.com\/fr\/?p=71\">Jacob Tukai<\/a> as Project Coordinator. Prior to joining the team, Jacob explored ecosystem financial values that natural ecologies and biodiversity hold and provided administrative and financial support for The Wildlife Foundation (TWF) in Kenya. Jacob holds an undergraduate degree in Environmental Studies from Kenyatta University, Kenya, and a certificate in Project Monitoring and Evaluation from MS TCDC, Arusha, Tanzania. He has a special interest in information technology, green energy development, finance and agriculture.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>September<\/h3>\n<h4>Sharing the 4R Nutrient Stewardship at the Africa Green Revolution Forum\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-823\" style=\"float: left;\" src=\"https:\/\/emergingag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/b2ap3_large_4R.png\" width=\"302\" height=\"116\" align=\"center\" data-style=\"clear\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emergingag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/b2ap3_large_4R.png 362w, https:\/\/emergingag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/b2ap3_large_4R-300x115.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 302px) 100vw, 302px\" \/>Emerging Ag coordinated <a href=\"https:\/\/fertilizercanada.ca\/\">Fertilizer Canada<\/a>\u2019s attendance at the 2019<a href=\"https:\/\/agrf.org\/about-agrf-2019\/\"> Africa Green Revolution Forum<\/a> (AGRF) held in Accra, Ghana. Fertilizer Canada launched their 4R Nutrient Stewardship project, which is being implemented in three African countries: Ethiopia, Ghana, and Senegal. The project works directly with 80,000 smallholder farmers, with a strong gender component, to share customized tools and best management practices for nutrient stewardship.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4>Target Malaria Mali imports modified mosquitoes<\/h4>\n<p>The Mali team marked an important milestone with the import of modified mosquitoes for work under containment at their insectary facility. The permission to import was received in 2018 from the biosafety agency.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>October<\/h3>\n<h4>UN Committee on World Food Security (CFS)<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-824\" style=\"float: left;\" src=\"https:\/\/emergingag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/b2ap3_large_CFS.jpg\" width=\"301\" height=\"200\" align=\"center\" data-style=\"clear\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emergingag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/b2ap3_large_CFS.jpg 449w, https:\/\/emergingag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/b2ap3_large_CFS-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 301px) 100vw, 301px\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/cfs\/home\/plenary\/cfs46\/en\/\">CFS46<\/a> took place at the FAO Headquarters in Rome October 14-18. The <a href=\"https:\/\/agrifood.net\/\">Private Sector Mechanism<\/a> (PSM) had its largest delegation to date, with 211 business leaders, including over 30 youth and representatives of youth organizations, from 45 countries.<\/p>\n<p>A successful meeting with FAO\u2019s new Director General, Dr Qu Dongyu, took place. 15 additional bilateral meetings occurred throughout the week.<\/p>\n<p>In Plenary, PSM was able to make 14 interventions on a broad selection of topics. PSM hosted 5 side events, which reached over 900 attendees on the topics of nutrition; agroecology and innovation, multi-stakeholder partnerships; and youth. In addition, PSM delegates spoke at 11 other side events. The Mexican food blog Avena Canadiense launched a YouTube channel in October to host a series of newly created videos. The videos vary from tasty Fruit &amp; Yogurt Popsicles with Oats, to crispy and delicious fish tacos. The videos are made in conjunction with the Mexican Food blogger Karla Hernandez from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pizcadesabor.com\/\">Pizca de Sabor<\/a> as well as the Mexican Diabetes Federation (<a href=\"http:\/\/fmdiabetes.org\/\">Federaci\u00f3n Mexicana de Diabetes<\/a>). To date, the videos have garnered over 1.2 million views on both Facebook and YouTube. Explore the archive and subscribe to the YouTube channel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCBdlbyTFsxtI9qR037ilwwg\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>November<\/h3>\n<h4>World Diabetes Day celebrations in Mexico City<\/h4>\n<p>On November 14, 2019, Avena Canadiense, with support from the Prairie Oat Growers Association (POGA) and Grupo Vida, celebrated World Diabetes Day with cooking workshops at the Colegio Superior de Gastronomia in Mexico City. The guests, diabetes patients and medical professionals, were taught how to cook the 12 recipes from the contest and learned about the nutritional benefits of adding oats into their diet. The training was captured in a photo album shared on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pg\/Avena.Canadiense\/photos\/?tab=album&amp;album_id=2478846565722602\">Facebook page.<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>December<\/h3>\n<h4>Target Malaria Communications<\/h4>\n<p>The website\u2019s new section on <a href=\"https:\/\/targetmalaria.org\/our-work\/\">\u201cOur Work\u201d<\/a> now features updated and expanded information about the project\u2019s approach, and new videos are available on the project\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/targetmalaria\">Vimeo<\/a> channel, including voices from Target Malaria\u2019s stakeholders in Uganda and Burkina Faso. Throughout the year, the project also published several studies, covering issues from <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosntds\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pntd.0007286\">responsible stakeholder engagement<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/royalsocietypublishing.org\/doi\/10.1098\/rspb.2019.1586\">gene drive resistance<\/a>.
