November 14 is World Diabetes Day<\/a>. For the third consecutive year, Avena Canadiense<\/a> is partnering with the Mexican Diabetes Federation, A.C.<\/a> to raise awareness about the importance of early diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes and the role of diet in diabetes management.<\/span><\/p>\n

The International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization began World Diabetes Day in 1991 in response to the growing health threat posed by diabetes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Diabetes is a very serious public health problem in Mexico where more than 12 million people live with diabetes and half of them ignore their condition. Diabetes is among the leading causes of death and disease in the country. Having a balanced diet and physical activity are key measures to prevent and reduce diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Oats consumption can improve the quality of life of people with diabetes because it helps improve blood sugar control. Oats are rich in carbohydrates, which are slowly absorbed by the body. In addition, oats contains both types of fiber; soluble and insoluble. The soluble one mainly helps to reduce the level of cholesterol and lower blood sugar levels. Oats also contains betaglucans, they are the components that absorb cholesterol and bile acids from the intestine preventing harmful compounds from entering the body and helping to eliminate them naturally.<\/span><\/p>\n

On November 6, Avena Canadiense and the Mexican Diabetes Federation, A.C. (FMD) conducted two cooking workshops at the College of Gastronomy.<\/a> Renowned chefs of the College of Gastronomy worked with 70 diabetes patients and health professionals and shared information on the importance of eating a balanced and healthy diet and the options offered by oats.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A varied menu of appetizing dishes made with oats was prepared using the recipes presented in the new Avena Canadiense recipe booklet “Cooking with Oats 2019”<\/a>. Winners of the 2019 Oats Recipe Contest also participated in the workshop.\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span><\/p>\n

Emerging runs the marketing campaign, Avena Canadiense<\/a>, on behalf of the Prairie Oat Growers Association<\/a>. This campaign aims at promoting Canadian oats in Mexico. Canada is the third world producer of oats and first exporter to Mexico. Increasing oat consumption in Mexico is important for public health because nutrition-related illnesses affect millions of people in the country. The campaign is conducted through a website<\/a>, a Facebook page<\/a> and a recently launched YouTube channel<\/a> sharing recipes using oats and tips on cooking with oats and on healthy diets and lifestyles.\u00a0<\/p>\n
