{"id":419,"date":"2014-12-04T20:28:37","date_gmt":"2014-12-04T20:28:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emergingag.com\/?p=419"},"modified":"2014-12-04T20:28:37","modified_gmt":"2014-12-04T20:28:37","slug":"launch-international-year-of-soils","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emergingag.com\/fr\/launch-international-year-of-soils\/","title":{"rendered":"Launch: International Year of Soils"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>December 5th marks celebrations and worldwide events for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/globalsoilpartnership\/world-soil-day\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Soil Day<\/a>, including the launch of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/soils-2015\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Year of Soils<\/a> 2015. Ahead of the launch, Farming First TV spoke to Ronald Vargas, of the Global Soil Partnership at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Food and Agriculture Organization<\/a>, about why the United Nations agency has declared an International Year of Soils in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Vargas explains that although soil is crucial for food production, and human health is dependent on nutrients \u201cthe knowledge on how to handle nutrients is not\u2026shared.\u201d An International Year of Soils, he explains, could bring together lots of different initiatives, to join forces to bring the issue of soil health to the global food security agenda.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Vargas also discusses the need to reduce the cost of technologies that test soil quality, to make them more available to farmers.
